The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has a duty to ensure immunization providers have the tools needed to provide the best patient care possible. To that end, we work to maintain an immunization information system that is user-friendly and modern. Since implementing NCIR, we have strived to continuously improve the experience for our providers and partners. The upcoming new version of NCIR modernizes the technology healthcare partners rely on to share data, track vaccines, and make sound decisions.
The anticipated launch date for the new NCIR is summer of 2025. Immunization providers can expect updates beginning this summer as information becomes available. Specific stakeholder groups will receive separate communications, as appropriate for that group. As we get closer to launch, you will receive information on training opportunities and other educational resources.
2/7/2025: A lot of planning is currently happening! We are planning integrations with all of the applicable external systems that need to communicate with the new NCIR. All existing connections will be established with the new system prior to go-live. We are also beginning to plan for migrating the existing data into the new system. Rest assured, all data in the current NCIR will be migrated into the new NCIR. We are also finalizing the user roles in the new system to ensure all users will have the access they need.
If you are using data exchange, you will not need to reestablish a connection with the new system. We will work with your EHR/EMR vendor to test the connection prior to go-live to prevent any disruption to your operations.
The new NCIR is on schedule to go-live in June 2025. The best thing you can do to prepare for the transition is to ensure your organization's inventory is cleaned up and you are reviewing your users and deactivating users who no longer need access. As the transition gets closer, there will also be plenty of training opportunities which will be communicated through multiple channels as soon as they are scheduled.
We are excited to be able to give you a first look at the new system during the virtual VFC Conference on March 6, 2025!
11/6/2024: While we are still in the Planning & Design Phase where we continue to work with our vendor to ensure our needs are documented and understood (there are a lot of them and we don't want to miss anything), these efforts will soon allow us to perform a "gap analysis" where we will then ensure those needs are addressed by the system. A little more technical, but we are also planning how the new system will successfully interact with all of the external systems it needs to get data from and pass data to.
We are also beginning to perform Execute & Build Phase activities in parallel. We are nearing completion of an initial test version of the new NCIR application that focuses on the look and feel of the user interface…which is what users will see when they log into and navigate NCIR. It incorporates a new NCIR logo and the associated color scheme!
There is still a long way to go in a short period of time, but things are steadily progressing and are on schedule!
7/29/2024: We are currently in the planning phase of the IIS replacement project. This means we are meeting with the vendor and making sure all our needs are documented and understood. We are also planning how the project will progress and how our teams will work together to ensure success from the very start!
Since many of you have asked, we are excited to share that a Patient Portal is part of the planned functionality for the new IIS. The access will be secure with usernames and passwords specific to the patient. Authorized caregiver access is also a planned feature.
While we have put a lot of effort into making sure that none of the existing NCIR functionality is lost and that we've incorporated as many improvements as we can, it's not too late to give us your ideas! Share your ideas or find out what functionality is planned by emailing NCIRquestions@dhhs.nc.gov.
Any updates will be shared here and by email. Please ensure your contact information in NCIR is up to date.
